Amy Hattan, Thornton Tomasetti

According to Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, their corporate sustainability officer Amy Hattan has received a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) award in the Real Estate, Construction & Housing sector from City & State Reports. Hattan was presented with an award for "Promoting the Principles of Sustainability throughout a Large Corporation" at a March 31st event at John Jay College.
The affiliated organization of City & State Magazine celebrates companies and individuals who have embraced and successfully promoted the principles of corporate social responsibility. Throughout the year, City & State Reports will host a series of events recognizing CSR leaders in major segments of the New York economy; this inaugural event highlighted executives in the real estate, construction and housing industries. Hattan was considered for the award based on 10 core principles of CSR, including commitment to the environment and sustainability, transparency, and volunteerism and community engagement.
Hattan, a LEED Green Associate with 19 years of experience in the sustainability arena, joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2012 as its first corporate sustainability officer.
She was instrumental in the development of a company-wide green champion program, which tasks employees with ensuring that their offices are meeting the firm's sustainable operations guidelines.
Hattan also implemented a bi-annual, firm-wide carbon footprint inventory, with the goal of achieving carbon-neutral business operations by 2030. She worked to establish a firm-wide policy to pursue LEED certification for all sizeable office fit-outs and major renovations. To date, three of the firm's offices - Philadelphia, Pa., Chicago, Ill., and Denver, Colo. - have achieved LEED Gold certification, with more to follow. She advocated to the firm's executive leadership the value of a corporate sustainability report. With the help of firm president Robert DeScenza, the annual report was published and shared with the firm's contacts and public at large, a unique step for an AEC firm headquartered in the United States.
Hattan holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Conservation from the University of N.H. in Durham, a master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a master's degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
Thornton Tomasetti has a strong history of volunteerism and community engagement, such as its involvement in the ACE Mentor Program. Hattan developed a volunteer day benefit for all employees in all offices, which allows them to provide assistance to various charitable organizations and programs during work hours.
