Executive of the Month: Abramson, director of sales and leasing at Buchbinder & Warren Realty Group: Commitment to his community

New York, NY William Abramson is a native New Yorker, born and raised in the Bronx. After graduating high school from Horace Mann, he earned a BA in Developmental Psychology from Boston University and an MA in Sports Management from NYU. After several years working as a personal trainer and playing rugby for Old Blue RFC, Bill opened and operated Maple Park Ltd., an enrichment center for parents and children in Rockville Center, Long Island for four years. After Maple Park, he worked at the Riverdale YM-YWHA for four and a half years, first as the health and fitness supervisor and eventually as the program director of health, physical education and recreation.

In 1996, he began work as the general manager of the Field House at Chelsea Piers, and 18 months later was promoted to first vice president.  At Chelsea Piers, he created and oversaw the human resources department for the entire complex, was the executive director of Chelsea Piers Summer Camp Programs, oversaw the NYU contract with Chelsea Piers and was general manager of the Field House and Sports Center, which have multi-million dollar budgets and a staff of over 250. As a senior member of the management team, he helped establish Chelsea Piers as the third largest tourist attraction in NYC, and a strong neighborhood amenity that increased real estate value in the surrounding area.

After leaving Chelsea Piers in 2005, he joined Buchbinder & Warren Realty Group, LLC. In less than a year he had established himself and was appointed director of sales and leasing.

His commitment to community is as impressive as his professional credentials. He presently serves as co-chair of the Union Square Partnership, is an executive member of The Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, and the treasurer of the Village Alliance. He has served as chairman of Community Board #8 in the Bronx, where he was a driving force behind the creation of the 197-A plan, a land use blueprint by which city agencies and local groups inspire area growth. He has been president of the board of directors of the Riverdale YM-YWHA, and was past president of the Benjamin Franklin Reformed Democratic Club.

Abramson is a recipient of a 2000 David Rockefeller Fellowship that helps develop top private sector leaders and engages them in New York City’s public arena and is overseen by the New York City Partnership. He has been selected several times as “Commander for the Day” by the Policeman’s Association and “Principal for a Day” by PENCIL. mayor Bloomberg appointed Bill to the Workforce Investment Board, where he served for seven years.  He also won a bronze medal as part of the USA Rugby team at the 1985 Maccabi Games in Israel.

Abramson was an adjunct professor at New York University, where he taught courses in Facility Management and Leadership in Management. He has owned a number of condos and co-ops in New York, and served as president of his condominium board for over five years. He has done numerous residential and commercial deals, serving on Real Estate Board of New York’s (REBNY) residential rental committee, and REBNY’s retail committees.

Aside from his accomplishments in both the public and private sectors, he is most proud of his family.  He is married to Susan and has two daughters, Jade (11), and Mia (10).
