DeSimone’s P.S. 62 project wins the 2016 AIANY COTE Award

P.S. 62 – The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability - Staten Island, NY

Staten Island, NY DeSimone Consulting Engineers, a leading full-service structural engineering firm with offices worldwide, served as structural engineer for P.S. 62 – The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability, which received the 2016 American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY) Committee on the Environment Award.

The school, designed by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), is one of the city’s first net-zero energy schools. The remarkable campus produces the same amount of energy as it consumes by utilizing energy-efficient lighting textures, low-energy kitchen equipment, a greenhouse and vegetable garden, a geo-exchange system, a solar thermal system for hot water, and other cutting-edge, sustainable technologies.

“DeSimone is proud to have served as structural engineer for P.S. 62, the first project in NYC that brings net-zero, sustainable design to realization and helps foster an environmental consciousness in all users of the building and the surrounding community,” said Natalie Bazile, project manager, DeSimone Consulting Engineers.”

Commissioned by the NYC School Construction Authority, the school serves as an example for future designs and features a “sustainability lab” where various green design methods and strategies are utilized with the goal of improving efficiency across the city’s other schools.
