Harborview Residence Hall, Wagner Hall - Staten Island, NY

Crystal Window & Door Systems (www.crystalwindows.com) has supplied 460 energy-efficient heavy-duty commercial aluminum windows for a college student housing window replacement project. The high-rise, 14-story Harborview Residence Hall towers over the 105-acre campus of Wagner College in the Grymes Hill section. This project is the latest in Crystal's growing list of student housing and other university window projects the company has supplied across the nation.
Projects include: Texas A&M, University of West Virginia, Rockefeller University, NYC, Ramapo State College, N.J., and St. Louis University, MO, among others.

The majority of windows for the Wagner College project were large 2-lite and 3-lite sliders, some of which reached sizes up to 122-½ in. by 67 in. The Series 5600 slider is AAMA rated as HS-AW40, while the Series 6200 slider is AAMA rated as HS-AW45/HC60. Rounding out the complement of windows for the building were 72 Crystal Series 5100 fixed picture windows that are AAMA rated as AW-PG100.

Most of the windows used optional ⅛" thick glass for both the interior and exterior panes of the windows' insulating glass units (IGUs). For even greater strength and structural performance, 3⁄16" glass was used for the new windows on higher floors of the dormitory building where wind load was determined to be greatest. With energy efficiency being a key requirement by Wagner College, all the window IGUs were ordered with PPG Solarban 60 glass and argon gas filling for enhanced thermal performance.

To afford fresh air comfort while still providing safety in the tall building, all the operating windows were equipped with fibermesh screens and 4" opening custom metal sash stops secured with tamper resistant screws. A variety of Crystal accessories, such as receptors, subsills, F-clips, and mullion systems, expedited the installation. All the windows were finished in a bronze color with Crystal's standard durable, weather resistant AAMA 2604 performance level VOC-free powder coat paint.

The window installation contractor was Marvel Contracting Service of Oakland Gardens, NY. Due to the building's height and its site atop an exposed hilltop, a specially requested structural engineering wind load analysis of the windows and anchorage systems was performed by Spiegel Consultants of New York, NY.
