BOMA/NY Annual Conference to focus on weather's economic impact

October 07, 2011 - Design / Build

Christine Quinn, New York City Council

The August trifecta of extreme weather - the earthquake, Noah-like rain on the 14th, and Tropical Storm Irene - has placed weather squarely on the economic radar screen, and with U.S. property losses for 2011 estimated at $42 billion, BOMA/NY is devoting the entire contents of its 2011 Annual Conference to weather's impact on real estate, and how to prepare for and mitigate loss.
The Conference and Annual Trade Show, scheduled for October 19 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel (program begins at 2 p.m.), will focus on the costs, liabilities and full range of economic, legal and insurance-related components of weather related emergencies - the costliest emergency owners and managers face. (This is particularly important here in NYC, as it is the country's only major city to experience an earthquake, tornado, blizzard and tropical storm in the course of one year.) The conference will also assess lessons learned from Irene, potential increases in insurance rates and how being pro-active can help minimize financial, to say nothing of physical, exposure.
