BOMA/NY Annual Conference to focus on weather's economic impact

The August trifecta of extreme weather - the earthquake, Noah-like rain on the 14th, and Tropical Storm Irene - has placed weather squarely on the economic radar screen, and with U.S. property losses for 2011 estimated at $42 billion, BOMA/NY is devoting the entire contents of its 2011 Annual Conference to weather's impact on real estate, and how to prepare for and mitigate loss. The Conference and Annual Trade Show, scheduled for October 19 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel (program begins at 2 p.m.), will focus on the costs, liabilities and full range of economic, legal and insurance-related components of weather related emergencies - the costliest emergency owners and managers face. (This is particularly important here in NYC, as it is the country's only major city to experience an earthquake, tornado, blizzard and tropical storm in the course of one year.) The conference will also assess lessons learned from Irene, potential increases in insurance rates and how being pro-active can help minimize financial, to say nothing of physical, exposure. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn Headlining Conference Launching the conference will be New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn, who will recap the city's weather-related response efforts, and discuss capital improvements to the City's infrastructure and their relationship to future economic growth. Panelists include: * Mike Smith, founder of Accuweather/Senior Meteorologist * Insurance: FM Global * Legal: John Osborn, Esq., John E. Osborn P.C. * Structural: Gary Mancini, P.E., LEED AP, Thornton Tomasetti * Building Code: Michael Alacha, PE, assistant commissioner for Engineering & Emergency Operations, NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) * Building Owner: Hani Salama, PE, LEED AP, Sr. VP of property management and operations, Monday Properties. The conference will be followed by a networking reception and also offers table-top exhibition opportunities with additional logo promotion. Costs are: * Members: Seminar/Reception: $220; Reception only: $185 * Non-Members: Seminar/Reception: $290; Reception only: $210 * Exhibitor & Logo Advertising: $1,250 Members; $1,900 Non-Members * Exhibitor (non-logo): $875 Members; $1,600 Non-Members All questions on registration and exhibits can be directed to BOMA/NY's director of legislative affairs, Sylvester Giustino at [email protected].

Most people think of St. Patrick’s Day as a fun footnote on the calendar. In construction logistics, however, it’s a full-scale operational variable — especially if your work touches major metro areas with major parades and, let’s call it what it is, enthusiastic celebrants.
