Starting out in the construction business, who or what empowered you?
I was empowered by the fantastic women professors I had in architecture school at who possessed a passion for design and architecture, while also maintaining a balanced personal life. Also, I was brought out to construction sites early on and was inspired by the women firm owners who commanded the room with the contractors.
Who within your own firm has helped you succeed within the construction industry?
I have the fortunate experience of working at Ronnette Riley Architect, a woman-owned business enterprise, in a very collaborative office filled with diverse women that are interested in a collective success of the work and each other. Each team member is willing to share experiences in helping all of us to succeed on the project at hand.
What advice would you offer to other women getting into the construction industry?
Find mentors of various experience levels and ages and begin asking questions right away. Do not be afraid. Also, if you are on a licensing path, you should get that license as soon as you can.
Why should women consider a career in construction?
Design and construction is an excellent career in seeing your visions through literally the built reality. Women are also exceptional problem solvers whether in the design phase or out in the field during construction.
