2026 Women in Construction: Joan Mitchell, EW Howell Co., LLC

Joan Mitchell
Office Manager
EW Howell Co., LLC

What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community? The accomplishment I’m most excited about is assisting management with our annual Obayashi Group Company Meeting last year. From organizing catering and transportation to supporting communication across departments, I helped create an environment where people could focus on collaboration and big-picture planning. When an event is organized well, it strengthens alignment, reinforces our shared goals, and helps every team move forward with clarity and purpose. Contributing to something that brings the company together and seeing its positive energy and connection was incredibly rewarding.

What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity? Family and faith are two things that bring balance and perspective to my life outside of work.

What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry? Step into the construction industry with confidence and purpose. This field is built on strength, resilience, and vision. Your perspective is not just welcomed, it’s needed. Every question you ask, every challenge you take on, and every idea you share helps pave the way for the women who will follow you. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, believe in your potential, and push you to grow. And remember you belong here, not because the door was opened for you, but because you earned your place and you can build incredible things - both on the jobsite and within your own career.
