2026 Ones to Watch - Industry Leaders: Zulekha Inayat, BRP Companies

Zulekha Inayat
Director
BRP Companies

“Zulekha Inayat has been instrumental in shaping BRP Companies’ impact. With expertise across acquisitions, financing, and construction, she combines vision and hands-on execution to deliver high-quality, community-focused developments. Her leadership strengthens neighborhoods, supports the firm’s growth, and sets a standard for excellence in every project she touches.”

What recent accomplishment or initiative are you most proud of, and what impact did it have on your firm, clients, or community?

I’m especially proud of helping advance projects such as Ruby Square and Archer Towers II, which together will deliver over 1,000 mixed-income and affordable homes in Jamaica, Queens. These developments also introduce significant retail space, fresh food access, and extensive resident amenities, contributing to a more vibrant, walkable neighborhood. Being involved in the full development life-cycle from acquisition to financing and execution has allowed me to help bring thoughtful, community-oriented developments to life with lasting local impact.

What book, podcast, or app has most influenced your approach to leadership?

The character in my current book always tries to do the right thing – which I think is universal.

What is one major challenge you’ve overcome as a leader, and what did it teach you?

One of the biggest challenges over the past five years has been navigating complex development projects in a rapidly evolving market while keeping them on track. Across acquisitions, financing, and construction, shifting conditions, regulatory changes, and multiple stakeholders require constant alignment. These experiences have reinforced the importance of staying adaptable, communicating clearly, and balancing decisiveness with patience to deliver projects that create lasting value for both investors and the community.

How do you inspire, motivate, or mentor others within your organization?

I lead with a collaborative, steady, and solutions-oriented approach, shaped by managing complex construction and development projects throughout my career. I aim to create an environment where colleagues feel supported, heard, and empowered to take ownership of their work. I also prioritize mentorship by sharing both technical and financial insights from my experience in deal acquisition, financing, and project management, helping junior team members build confidence, strengthen their skills, and grow professionally.

What advice would you share with emerging professionals striving to become future leaders in commercial real estate?

I would encourage emerging professionals to stay curious and develop a strong foundation across all aspects of the business. Understanding how design, finance, construction, and community needs intersect strengthens decision-making and leadership. Be proactive, ask thoughtful questions, and embrace challenging assignments. Some of the best growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone and learning to navigate complex projects with confidence and purpose.

Who has had the greatest impact on your career or leadership journey?

My dad – he is also a developer, and he taught me about hard work, integrity, and perseverance.
