What is one major challenge you’ve overcome as a leader, and what did it teach you?

One persistent challenge is flexibly managing staff. Over my career, I have worked with many talented staff members and colleagues. Sometimes it is challenging to work in a coordinated manner that best utilizes their talents. To deal with this issue, I often adjust my work process and my schedule to best fit the current circumstances. Sometimes this will require me to review documents evenings and weekends so that the work is ready next morning. I try not to be a bottleneck. This helps to maximize staff productivity and meet deadlines. In the end it’s about efficiency and client service.

What recent accomplishment or initiative are you most proud of, and what impact did it have on your firm, clients, or community?

Leading a long-time client’s business acquisition. It involved detailed consideration and negotiation of the asset purchase agreement, together with several real estate contracts and financing documents. A few firm departments had to work together as a team. It was challenging to coordinate the work of multiple attorneys and departments. The hard work paid off and the deal closed. The transaction doubled the size of the client, and demonstrated the synergies of teamwork. A great result for client and firm!

How do you inspire, motivate, or mentor others within your organization?

Effective mentoring requires a long term commitment. To me, that starts with providing an example of hard work and approaching client projects with diligence. Such an example is contagious. It is important to be available for questions and discussions, so that you can support your colleagues and reinforce the example that you set. Questions and discussions about work promote a collegial atmosphere. Such discussions are critical for developing analytical thinking. What advice would you share with emerging professionals striving to become future leaders in commercial real estate?

Technical proficiency is paramount to success. As a professional, you should always build on your experience and strive to improve. Never stop learning and improving!

What daily habit or routine helps you stay focused or motivated as a leader?

Reading & drawing inspiration from others, and developing a mindset for creative solutions.

What book, podcast, or app has most influenced your approach to leadership?

Moneyball by Michael Lewis is an inspirational true story.

Who has had the greatest impact on your career or leadership journey?

My retired mentor, Ernie Goetz, a great attorney who always strived for excellence.
