2026 Developing Long Island: U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Memorial Pavilion
Valley Stream, NY The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association & Foundation Memorial Pavilion at United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, reimagines the Academy’s Memorial Arbors as a prominent waterfront destination for remembrance, reflection, and healing. Unveiled in 2026, the pavilion honors the legacy of Merchant Mariners while providing an enduring gathering place for alumni, cadets, families, and visitors.
Designed by H2M architects + engineers, the structure evokes the form of a sailing ship through a composition of masts and shade sails, drawing inspiration from the maritime heritage that defines the Academy. Star-shaped openings and embossed stainless-steel roof elements cast ever-changing patterns of sunlight across engraved black granite monuments throughout the day, creating a dynamic and contemplative visitor experience. Where the previous Memorial Arbors only featured enough space for 2,700 individuals, the new Memorial Pavilion has room to incorporate display plaques for all future additions through 2040.
High-performance shade sails provide comfort and protection while preserving an open-air connection to the surrounding waterfront landscape. The Memorial Pavilion stands as both a meaningful tribute and a lasting campus landmark.
