What has been the most rewarding project or deal you’ve worked on in your career, and why?

The proposed QDOBA in Lindenhurst has been one of my most rewarding projects. This relatively small site required careful consideration through many iterations of concept plans to best accommodate the project’s needs. This project highlights many firsts for me, including my first experience attending a town board hearing and my first time directly coordinating with the client, attorney, architect and traffic engineer. It enhanced my capability and confidence as a designer and communicator.

What skill or quality do you believe is essential for success in your field today?

Curiosity, the unwavering desire to learn, know and understand, is vital for success. In just two years, I have learned more than I thought was possible. Oftentimes, I find myself going down long rabbit holes of research or having open-ended discussions that have expanded my knowledge of niche topics critical for designs. Whether deciphering updated codes and regulations, exploring new products, or deepening my understanding of the basics, there is always more to learn.

If you could change one thing about the CRE industry, what would it be and why?

I wish there were more meaningful experience opportunities for individuals entering the field, as the collaboration of new ideas and diverse perspectives aids efficiency and growth. The need for experience and knowledge from the start can be rather intimidating. I was very fortunate to happen upon a few drafting classes in high school, which have helped me immensely at my internship and full-time job with Key Civil Engineering, who has since given me a multitude of opportunities.

What advice would you give to a woman considering a career in commercial real estate?

Never be afraid to speak up, whether to ask questions, assist a colleague, or identify and offer solutions to errors or misunderstandings. Speaking up benefits you and those around you. I always appreciate when others contribute as I work through a problem, and I appreciate when someone notes something that seems unclear. Collaboration and coordination are critical for success.
