2024 Women in CRE: Salmah Nashurdeen, Mark Design Studios Architecture

Salmah Nashurdeen
Architectural Designer
Mark Design Studios Architecture

Why should this nominee be recognized in our Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlight?

“Salmah has proven herself to be a critical thinker to overcome obstacles, whether it is a design challenge or an onsite unforeseen situation. I am confident she will have continued success and longevity in her career centered on her positive can-do attitude and confident energy.” - Irene Yim, IIDA, ASID, Vice President at Mark Design Studios Architecture, PC.

What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of?

Recently, I have just finished a project at Chaminade HS with my team where we renovated the cafeteria. The project was fast paced as we needed to accomplish the entire project before school started back. Picking furniture, finishes, lighting, and everything else that goes into making a space work is a lengthy process but seeing the final result at the end and having a satisfied client is always rewarding!

What are the most important factors young women should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with?

There are so many factors that come into play when choosing a new firm. Young women coming right out of school should consider joining firms that will be open to teaching and will help to grow your skills as a young professional. Firms that mentor, encourage professional growth, give responsibility, and provide a wide array of projects and tasks to quickly grow your skills are perfect to join when first starting out.

Who inspires you most? What qualities do they possess that inspire you?

I meet many women in this field who inspire me; from the VP at my firm who is very knowledgeable in this field, to current and past women I’ve worked with who have such amazing drive to become successful in their careers, and to the vendors that work with us who have such dedication to their job and the project at hand. Every day I am inspired by women around me who are ambitious, keep a level head with deadlines/stress, and have a love for teaching others. It’s hard to choose just one as you can take inspiration from anywhere!

Which professional organization(s) would you recommend to women just starting out in your industry:

Young Professional’s Committee and Girl’s Inc are two great organizations to check out.
