2023 Year in Review: Sean McLoughlin, McAlpine Contracting

Sean McLoughlin
Project Manager
McAlpine Contracting

What was your greatest professional accomplishment or most notable project, deal, or transaction in 2023? I led McAlpine Contracting’s team that has successfully completed four specialized luxury veterinary clinics totaling more than $10 million in construction value. They required coordination of large teams, including designers, equipment manufacturers and specialty consultants, in order to meet very tight deadlines. These high-end projects included the Hospital for Veterinary Surgery and Prism Veterinary Dentistry in Manhattan, The Animal Cardiology Center in Brooklyn and Veterinary Eye Center in Queens.

How has your career path changed in 2023? In recent years, I have developed an expertise in managing construction of human and veterinary healthcare facilities. These projects require an in-depth understanding of very specialized technical and logistical issues, from coordination with manufacturers to complexities of delivering and installing state-of-the art and oversized equipment, structural and M/E/P requirements, and protective shielding of radiology rooms.

What emerging trends will drive investment and development in 2024? Medical construction is one of the fastest growing market segments for the AEC industry. Firms offering expertise in this market will be growing at an accelerated rate and to some extent will remain protected from potential economic slowdowns. McAlpine is currently working on several projects in this sector, including 14,000 s/f of pre-built medical offices at Macklowe Properties-owned 110 East 60th St. in Manhattan, several healthcare facilities on Long Island and multiple veterinary clinics in New York City.
