In the past year, what project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of?
I represented the borrower/developer in the development of phases one and two of a three-building, three-phased mixed-use affordable project. The project is one of the first projects to close in the newly rezoned Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York. Phase one development cost was over $105 million. Phase two development cost is over $76 million. I also represented Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, Inc. in connection with the development, construction, structuring and financing of its new 80,000 s/f healthcare facility in Queens. Our client has developed the project on their own (their first ground up construction project) with our support. The project is almost complete, and I have been working on take-out sources.
How do you contribute to your community or your profession?
I teach at Fordham Law School as an adjunct professor and active in the Asian American Bar Association New York (AABANY) serving as a real estate committee member. Serving on multiple boards, I am on the Urban Law Center board, where I co-chair the Minority Mentorship Program. I also serve on the Child School/Legacy High School board and the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA) Manhattan Board, where I serve as the head of the Policy Committee. I am also a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL) Fellowship class of 2021. Members are invited to join following a rigorous screening process that determines outstanding legal ability, experience, and high standards of professional conduct.
How do you keep your team motivated despite conflicts and obstacles?
On large complex transactions with multiple lenders and investors, the communication and organization of the working group is critical. It is important to set larger and smaller goals to keep the momentum going.
How do you advocate for your fellow women in real estate?
I currently mentor several women in commercial real estate. I have been the beneficiary of strong mentoring and feel very blessed. External organizations such as NYCREW and W/X are great organizations for women to network. Internally at Akerman LLP, we have a very strong women’s internal network.
What books or social media influencers would you recommend to other women?
I would recommend reading historical biographies of accomplished women.
Why should women consider a career in commercial real estate and related services?
Commercial real estate is dynamic, diverse, and engaging. You will never be bored.
Tell us a thing or two about you that is NOT on your resume or LinkedIn profile?
I enjoy cooking, baking, decorating, and entertaining. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been entertaining small groups of clients, family, and neighbors. I have enjoyed the dynamic of smaller groups.
