2021 Women in CRE: Laura Miller, X-Caliber Capital

Laura Miller

Senior Vice President, Bridge Loan Portfolio Management

X-Caliber Capital

In the past year, what project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of?
Since I joined X-Caliber in June of 2021, our portfolio has increased 130%, so my greatest accomplishment has been the management of such a quickly growing portfolio, probably the fastest I’ve experienced to date in my career. This rapid expansion has helped me further sharpen my overall portfolio management skills to ensure the onboarding and monitoring processes are executed swiftly and correctly.

How do you contribute to your community or your profession?
I have previously served on the board of Love INC, a non-profit organization that assists churches to help people with material, emotional, or relational poverty. Interestingly, overall, I am also drawn to help serve the older adult community, and I believe that is why I have been drawn to a profession that allows me to support the seniors community by providing loans for primarily healthcare and senior living facilities.

How do you keep your team motivated despite conflicts and obstacles?
I like to say that I live on the sunny side of the street and my glass is always half full. For me, teamwork truly makes the dream work. As part of that philosophy, I feel strongly that it is important to celebrate each other’s successes and give kudos, where appropriate. In the event there is an obstacle or conflict, I am a firm believer that it is my duty as a manager to provide mentorship and support to help individuals, not only navigate that issue, but to learn and grow from it.

How do you advocate for your fellow women in real estate?
I find myself surrounded by capable, wonderful women and it is an amazing position to be in. I support, advocate for, and celebrate them every day.

What books or social media influencers would you recommend to other women?
I admire Brené Brown and think she offers great wisdom for all women.

Why should women consider a career in commercial real estate and related services?
Women are inherently strong multitaskers and real estate lends itself to embracing that quality, as there are always many moving parts in a real estate career. The recognition of women’s strength in being able to juggle and manage many things has created a runway of opportunities they can pursue and seize.

Tell us a thing or two about you that is NOT on your resume or LinkedIn profile?
I love to travel, but I don’t need to go to exotic destinations. I have personally discovered that in every destination, small or large, I always find something distinctive about that town and I enjoy uncovering each town’s unique attributes. Every small town has a gift and I enjoy exploring and digging for each of the treasures they hold.
