In the past year, what project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of?
Being designated by GlobeSt./RE Forum as a 2021 Woman of Influence and awarded its Diversity Champion honor. 2021 was an extremely busy and successful year for me professionally, including closing the structured financing, and executing other restructuring aspects of a complex transaction involving a significant global medical facility. Yet, the Diversity Champion award represents to me that my lifelong passionate commitment to the diversity and inclusion of all underrepresented–and unheard–people within the community has been effective in some way, and inspires me to continue.
How do you advocate for your fellow women in real estate?
Primarily through my active strategic engagement in a few industry organizations focused on advancing women to achieve parity in commercial real estate. Among those is CREWNY, in which I serve as director, and its “parent,” CREW Network. CREW Network is a transformative force in advancing all women in the industry through its extensive research, numerous career-enhancing programs, leadership development and opportunities, and the training and tools for success. As a founding partner of the Alabama Center for Real Estate’s new CORE Program launched to attract talent from underrepresented groups to commercial real estate careers, CREW Network will provide scholarship funds, educational content, and mentoring for female students at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). I am looking forward to actively participating in that endeavor.
Why should women consider a career in commercial real estate and related services?
Although barriers to advancement, particularly to the C-Suite, definitely remain, because of the dearth of women in the industry there is a real need, and opportunity, for women to contribute the unique skills, perspectives and styles to the industry. There are also a number of CRE industry non-profit organizations having a mission to support women in their CRE careers and success therein.
