2019 Ones to Watch: Gianluca Carrabs, Janover LLC

Name: Gianluca Carrabs

Title: Senior Tax Manager

Company Name: Janover LLC

Year that you entered your current field? 2009

Who or what do you attribute to your success?

Working with partners that have allowed me to take ownership of client responsibility. This allowed me to be a trusted advisor and have direct interactions with clients at a high level which has led to my growth and development. Being around some very technical partners has also pushed me to learn and become the “firm expert” in aspects of the new tax law. It has allowed me to advise clients on high level tax issues.

What advice can you offer to someone who is interested in a career in your industry?

Work hard, be a sponge, and read, read, read. Find out what aspect of this profession you enjoy the most and try and be the best at it in your firm/organization. Trying to learn it all just doesn’t work that well anymore. In order to advance in a larger firm/organization you must specialize and be considered an expert.

What was your favorite thing to do as a kid?

I always loved playing competitive sports as a kid. Every weekend I had something going on. Soccer, baseball and lacrosse. I went on to play lacrosse as a starter for two years at a local Division III school.

If you have a mentor, who is it and how have they influenced your personal & professional growth?

I didn’t have a mentor, but one of the tax partners allowed me to be myself and own everything I was assigned to with him. Zero micro managing and he was there when I needed him. I learned from my mistakes and I learned from his many years of experience. That helped me grow professionally and excel faster than my peers.
