2018 Women in Real Estate and Construction Services: Yue Zhao, Leslie E. Robertson Associates

Name: Yue Zhao

Title: Associate

Company Name: Leslie E. Robertson Associates

Years in your current field: 5

What professional organizations or associations are you a member of? SEAoNY, CTBUH

What was your greatest professional accomplishment in 2017?

My greatest professional achievement in 2017 is to see the building I have designed being constructed. While touring the construction site, I felt resonated with the huge column-free atrium space that features the structural designs. Our holistic design approach of integrating the structural system as a part of the overall building has turned out successfully in real life. I am very proud that both the seamless structures and exposed to view structures we designed highlight the aesthetics of the building.

If you have had a mentor in your career, who was it and what did they teach you?

My mentors are all my coworkers at LERA. I am very lucky being surrounded by a group of people who are supportive, talented, and knowledgeable. We grow our professional skills together in a collaborative environment. I learnt from them how to efficiently nail down and solve problems, and I am inspired by them to face any new challenges without fear although as a young profession. My co-workers make me feel enjoyable and encouraged every day at work.

What trends are you seeing so far this year in your field?

Modular construction is a hot topic these days. Many buildings have adopted this new technique to save project labor costs and improve the constructability of the project. Virtual Reality also provides our industry with lots of possibilities. LERA has been leading the VR software development in the field of building service. We have successfully launched an integrated tool for developers, architects, and MEP engineers to enhance effective coordination.

When I am not working I am…

A cook. I love cooking different cuisines, watching TV shows and Youtube videos that can improve my cooking skills.
