How have you navigated obstacles to achieve success in your career? I have been fortunate in my career to have had few obstacles. Those I have encountered were caused by cyclical industry downturns over the years leading to consolidations of company resources. The way to navigate those is to take advantage of opportunities at your job. Sometimes you have to create those yourself. Internally, find a niche you can fill and become the go to resource. Externally, develop your brand industry wide. Don’t be afraid to promote yourself by joining industry trade associations and serving on committees and boards. Use social media to disseminate information that others come to rely on.

How do you play your strengths to your advantage in your career? Understanding your strengths is the first step to leveraging them. Strengths are not just what you are good at. Playing to your strengths energizes you and that positivity feeds on itself. For me, it was realizing I was good at figuring out ways to help others achieve their goals. I am also good at auditing but the job exhausted me. While people can learn from being audited it’s not an event they like participating in. In a sales role, I actively work with customers to help them grow their business. That gives me greater satisfaction and makes me a better and more valuable employee.

What trends are you seeing so far this year? Combatting cybercrime is a big industry trend. The NY DFS implemented a comprehensive set of cyber security regulations on March 1. Additionally, I have been following the chatter about how blockchain technology could impact the title insurance industry. It’s seen as a way to revolutionize land record keeping.

What do you do for fun? I enjoy my volunteer work with a local cat rescue and adoption group and walking around the city and exploring new neighborhoods.
