How did you get your start in real estate?
Worked for a construction company which became developers in NYC New Homes Program.
What recent project or transaction are you most proud of?
Building 2007 LaFonatine Avenue, Bronx, NY. When I came to this country in 1981, to me, the Bronx was hell – burnt out and decrepit buildings not suited for animals much less human. I left the Bronx after a year, lived upstate for a while and return just before graduating from high school and enlisting in the ARMY. The section of Tremont where LaFontaine is located was within walking distance of where I lived and attended High School. I always wanted to see the Bronx revitalized. The day I received the Certificate of Occupancy for ‘LaFontaine’, made me feel like I was a part of The Bronx revitalization.
What have been some of the benefits of being a mentor or having a mentor?
I place everyone in my life, regardless who they are, into a category based upon a tree analogy. A leaf, people who are around for a season, branch, here for a time, longer than a season, but do not expect much from them, then a root, those who are with you through the good and bad, to make you a better person. The relationships we create helps determine our path. As a mentor; I share my experiences–failures and successes with my mentees. I encourage them to understand the difference in people so that they make decisions that is in their best interest.
What is the best advice you have received and who was it from?
My grandmother always cautioned me to “swiftly hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
