03-25-2014 - NYCREW goes "Green" for women's history month

The New York Chapter of Commercial Real Estate Women's Network will honor Women's History Month by hosting leaders making New York City's buildings environmentally friendly at "Women Greening NYC: Sustainability in Commercial Real Estate," an Industry Spotlight event to be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on March 25th, at the offices of Ted Moudis & Associates, 79 Madison Ave. Moderator (and NYCREW Member) Amelia Janisz, CEO and president of Easy Building Environmental Health and Safetywill be joined by: Charlotte Matthews, vice president of sustainability for Related Companies; Sukanya Paciorek, senior vice president of corporate sustainability at Vornado Realty Trust; and Eleni Reed,Chief Greening Officer of the U.S. General Services Administration Public Buildings Service. The four will discuss the opportunities and challenges in helping owners and managers reduce the energy use and carbon footprint of their buildings. "Sustainable development and redevelopment no longer is a trend. It's a necessity both to save operating costs and to attract tenants," said Erin Beitz, director of acquisitions for Carmel Partners LLC, and a NYCREW board member and co-chair of the programs committee. "I'm looking forward to hearing Amelia lead this discussion, and to what this extraordinary panel of experts has to say." NYCREW's March Industry Spotlight traditionally honors Women's History Month with a focus on the critical role women have played in New York City's real estate community throughout the decades. In previous years, panels have discussed the role of Emily Warren Roebling in completing father-in-law John Roebling and husband Washington Roebling's construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, and women in real estate media. In addition, to honor the observance, the organization is offering discounted pricing for this event: NYCREW Members, $50; CREW Chapter Members, $85; Non-CREW Members, $110; Students, $30. "Clearly, the story of women in commercial real estate is a long and fabled one, dating back to the 19th century and even earlier," said NYCREW 2014 president Laura Walker, a senior vice president at Citibank. "We at NYCREW are thrilled to be part of the current chapters of this story, by offering networking events, mentoring and leadership skill training that will continue to shape New York City's future." This session is the second of a number of instructive and relationship-building events NYCREW has planned throughout the year. Future Spotlights are tentatively scheduled to discuss issues in hospitality and the lessons Lower Manhattan has learned regarding building resiliency in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
