Manhattan, NY When completed next year, the Marriott Hotel now rising above Harlem’s historic Victoria Theater will accelerate the economic revitalization of central Harlem’s main commercial corridor on West 125th St.
Built in 1917, the Victoria Theater’s lobby is being restored to serve as the entrance to the new 26-story, 210-room Marriott Hotel designed by Aufgang Architects.
Aufgang’s design for the hotel and conference facility also includes office and performance space for non-profit cultural and community organizations.
“Restoring this important part of Harlem’s cultural history was a major objective in designing the new Marriott Hotel. This example of historic preservation and adaptive reuse is key to sustaining Harlem’s cultural identity as part of the community’s economic growth and development,” said Ariel Aufgang, AIA, principal of Aufgang Architects.
Also to rise north of the Marriott Hotel is an Aufgang-designed 25-story residential building with 191 units, half of which are affordable.
Established in 1971, Aufgang Architects LLC has earned a reputation for thoughtful, effective, and creative designs for luxury condos, affordable housing, hotels and ambitious preservation projects. The firm’s portfolio includes recent designs that have attracted significant attention, such as the renovation of the Corn Exchange Bank Building on Fifth Avenue in Harlem and the conversion of a landmark Brillo factory in DUMBO to luxury condos. Since 1999 the firm has designed nearly 20 million square feet of built space, including over 14,000 units of affordable housing.
