Stalco International Group completes 12,000 s/f Florence Building warehouse in collaboration with Baldassano Architecture

Stalco International Group, an affiliate of Stalco Construction, Inc., has completed construction of the 12,000 s/f Florence Building Supply's warehousing facility. Stalco, an Authorized VarcoPruden Builder, designed and engineered the structure in collaboration with Baldassano Architecture, based on Varco Pruden's (VP) customizable pre-engineered building system. Stalco served as the pre-engineered building design/builder, while Baldassano was the architect and foundation and MEP engineer. "This $950,000 project demonstrates the benefits of custom engineered structures provided by Varco Pruden," said Stalco principal Kevin Harney. "Employing the VP system reduced the design and construction time by 50% in comparison to the traditional process. In addition, the total building cost was approximately 20% lower than that of a similar building constructed in a conventional system." "Varco Pruden's sophisticated, proprietary design software - VP Command - allows for review of multiple design and pricing alternatives within minutes or hours, a process that traditionally takes days or weeks," said Stalco International Group's pre-engineered building designer and chief estimator Scott Pavick. "The ability to immediately review various engineering alternatives allowed the owner and the design team to expeditiously select the most economically and functionally viable option and proceed with fabrication and construction shortly after." Located at 1647 East Jericho Tpke., the project encompassed demolition of a section of a pre-existing building and construction of a new foundation system and warehouse building structure. Stalco installed all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as materials storage equipment. The building's foundation features a continuous foundation wall, six-inch slab on grade concrete floor, and concrete piers that support main structural frame elements. The site work encompassed construction of four, 11-foot-deep, 10-foot-diameter, concrete storm water run-off pools. The new, one-story facility is connected to two pre-existing buildings, an office structure and another storage building. The new warehouse features a rigid frame structural system, standing seam metal roof and green Varco Pruden corrugated metal wall panels. On the front, street-facing façade, Stalco installed sand-colored, flat Varco Pruden TextureClad embossed metal wall panels designed to emulate stucco finish. The building features 12 Baylight combination unit 4'x8' prismatic skylights, which provide the interiors with daylight infiltration that exceeds the requirements of the town's building code. "The project presented the team with several unusual challenges," said Stalco's project manager Joseph Solloch. "The new warehouse occupies the same location and footprint as the demolished building. The structure was erected between two adjacent buildings and connects to the office building, which required very detailed logistical, staging and engineering planning." At the area of connection between the buildings, the team removed a section of the office building's exterior CMU wall and replaced it with a structural steel system that connects with ties to the warehouse's structure. The connection features expansion joints.
