David Sloane, a real estate partner at
Certilman Balin, died on Sunday, June 28th. He was 77.
He represented many major developers, national home builders and national retailers in the areas of commercial real estate, zoning, and land-use. His firm, Mars, Sloane & Conlon merged with
Certilman Balin 13 years ago, creating an office in Hauppauge which he managed.
One of his more noteworthy accomplishments was his representation of TRITEC Development Group's The New Village at Patchogue, a mixed-use residential development consisting of a 291 unit apartment complex, 50,000 s/f of retail space and 20,000 s/f of office space to downtown. This project won a 2008 Smart Growth Award from Vision Long Island and the 2009 Top Mixed-Use Project Award from Long Island Business News. In appreciation for his work as lead attorney, the real estate developer named a street after him, "Sloane St."
In addition, he was lead counsel for a subsidiary of TRITEC, the master developer for the proposed transit orientated development of 50+ acres at the Ronkonkoma LIRR station, referred to as the Ronkonkoma Hub, consisting of 1450 residential units and hundreds of thousands of s/f of retail, office and entertainment venue.
He was a former special town attorney to the town of Brookhaven, a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association, the Real Estate Law Committee, Environmental Law Committee and Municipal Law Committee of the NYS Bar Association, and an active member of the Long Island Builders Institute.
He lectured on issues relating to his areas of expertise. Long Island Business News named him to the "Who's Who in Commercial and Residential Real Estate Law" list for the years 2007 and 2012.
After graduating from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960, Sloane earned a Juris Doctor in 1963 and Master of Laws in Taxation in 1967 from New York University.
A life-long resident of Patchogue, Sloane was active in community and professional affairs his entire life. He served as past-president of the Patchogue Lions Club, a former member of the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital board of directors, a member of the board of directors of the Brookhaven Roe YMCA, and has made substantial contributions to many other civic endeavors. He also served on the advisory board of Chicago Title Insurance Company.
Sloane is survived by his wife, Emily, children Richard (Lisa), Peter, Samantha (Steve), Matthew, stepson Spencer, and grandchildren Eliza, Savannah, Jack, Will, Rhionnon, Max and stepgrandchildren, TJ and Valerie.
