Skanska will expand the length and width of the existing West End Concourse of Penn Station, which currently serves as a secondary access point to train platforms for Long Island Railroad (LIRR), N.J. Transit and Amtrak commuters. The expansion will improve passenger circulation and capacity. They will also build two new entrances into Moynihan Station, offering commuters direct passenger access from Eighth Ave. to the West End Concourse. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion in July 2016.
Skanska has a long history of building complex transportation and infrastructure projects throughout the U.S., and has played a significant role in helping to build and improve New York City's modern-day transportation system. In 2002, Skanska rebuilt New York City's largest and busiest subway stop: the Times Square Subway Station, which serves as a hub for four subway lines carrying over 500,000 passengers daily. In 2005, Skanska also completed renovations at the Roosevelt Avenue / 74th Street station in Queens.
Currently, Skanska is constructing the Second Avenue Subway line on the Upper East Side, the NJ PATH Station at the World Trade Center's Transportation Hub and the Fulton Street Transit Center, which will create a hub connecting five subway stations and 10 subway lines in lower Manhattan. Skanska is also part of the joint venture that constructed the tunnel for the No. 7 Line extension that will soon link Times Square to the West Side of Manhattan and received the contract for installing finishes and systems at the No. 7 Line extension at West 26th and 11th Avenue. Work on that project is expected to be completed June 2014.
