Shawmut Construction completes 15th Shake Shack

December 09, 2013 - Design / Build
Shawmut Design and Construction has completed the construction of the new 15th Shake Shack located in the city's Grand Central Terminal. The recently opened Shack is housed within the Lower Level Dining Concourse, adjacent to the famed "Whispering Gallery." The Shack will serve its classics daily to on-the-go commuters and tourists alike.
The 1,500 s/f Grand Central Terminal location features reclaimed resources including tables constructed of wood from a Brooklyn bowling alley. The Shawmut team also incorporated the 1920s ticket booth from Grand Central Terminal into the façade.
"The Grand Central Terminal Shake Shack was a challenging project as it's located in one of the busiest stations in the world," said Les Hiscoe, Shawmut Design and Construction COO. "The service provided to our clients is a real differentiator for Shawmut and allows us to build great long-term relationships like the one we have with Shake Shack."
Since 2008, Shawmut has been Shake Shack's go-to builder for its most challenging locations. The design and construction of each space is executed with the goal of minimizing the environmental footprint of the location through use of sustainable materials. Highlights include reclaimed snow fence and barn boards used on walls throughout many of the other Shake Shack locations.
"We at Shake Shack partner with Shawmut because they are able to perform with predictability in the face of unpredictable circumstances. Presented with difficult site logistics or aggressive schedules, they maintain a singular focus on getting the job done," said Lou DeAngelis, director of construction and facilities at Shake Shack.
The completion of the Grand Central location marks Shawmut's 15th Shake Shack including 6 other locations in New York, Shake Shack's first locations in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., along with locations in Miami Beach, FL, New Haven CT, Chestnut Hill, MA, and Westport, CT. Along with Grand Central Terminal, Shawmut simultaneously completed locations in King of Prussia, PA and at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA which also recently opened. Shawmut also just began construction of a location in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA this month and plans to begin construction on a second Brooklyn Shack across from the Barclays Center toward the end of the year.
