Shawmut completes Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at Newark Liberty International Airport

Shawmut Design and Construction, located at 3 East 54th St. in Manhattan, has completed construction of the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at Newark Liberty International Airport. The project included the total fit-out and transformation of an existing space into a high-end lounge, complete with a full bar, high-end millwork, custom glass, wood flooring, ornamental metals, and a new skylight. Designed by New York City-based Slade Architecture in conjunction with Virgin Atlantic's in-house design team, the new space captures New York City's downtown flair and Virgin Atlantic's brand. "Shawmut is excited to have a great new partner in Virgin Atlantic Airlines," said Randy Shelly, director of Shawmut's Transportation Group. "Shawmut's ability to execute high-end projects with complex logistics while keeping the work site safe and secure is what makes us a preferred builder in this area." Working in an active airport environment presents multiple challenges, including the coordination of the arrival and removal of materials and debris with both local authorities and airport operations staff. Shawmut also adhered to strict safety and security standards. Although this is Shawmut's first project with Virgin Atlantic, the Company is steadily increasing its presence in the transportation sector and has recently completed five projects at LaGuardia Airport Terminal D in New York City and the Lufthansa Business Lounges at Logan International Airport. Most people think of St. Patrick’s Day as a fun footnote on the calendar. In construction logistics, however, it’s a full-scale operational variable — especially if your work touches major metro areas with major parades and, let’s call it what it is, enthusiastic celebrants.
