New York, NY To support the building industry as ambitious climate policies come into play, Building Energy Exchange (BE-Ex) has expanded into the digital realm—bringing their unique educational resources to the homes of building professionals across New York state and beyond, via BE-Ex Ed, an on-demand e-learning platform.

Since 2010, non-profit Building Energy Exchange has been accelerating the transition to healthy, comfortable, and low-energy use buildings. As an energy efficiency resource center and convening space in downtown Manhattan, BE-Ex brings together diverse stakeholders from across the design, construction, and real estate communities to cross-pollinate ideas, exchange dialogue, participate in educational programs, and develop actionable solutions to pressing challenges. As buildings take an increasingly central role in New York’s climate agenda–with groundbreaking new emissions limits for New York City buildings, and statewide carbon reduction commitments– these resources are more vital than ever.

BE-Ex’s new e-learning platform, BE-Ex Ed, offers virtual classes on high-performance building design and construction strategies that lower energy use, increase occupant comfort, maximize profitability, and meet the demands of New York’s ambitious climate change agenda. With courses ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, BE-Ex Ed offers content for learners of all types— from those new to the world of high-performance buildings, to seasoned industry professionals looking to advance their knowledge and earn continuing education credits.

Among the courses offered is a suite of classes on the Passive House building standard, an ultra-low energy, high-comfort building standard gaining traction in the New York City market. BE-Ex Ed’s introductory Passive House Primer, one of the organization’s most popular and long-running trainings, provides a critical entryway for new audiences to learn about the key principles of high-performance design. A series of related modules provides a deeper dive into more technical aspects of Passive House design and construction.

BE-Ex Ed also offers a primer on New York City’s Climate Mobilization Act, a suite of climate action laws targeting the building sector—including Local Law 97 (limits on building-based carbon emissions), Local Law 95 (building energy efficiency grades), and Local Laws 92 & 94 (rooftop solar and green roof requirements)—that will require dramatic shifts in the way New Yorkers design, construct, retrofit, and operate buildings of all types.

The launch of BE-Ex Ed arrives alongside Climate Week NYC, an annual week-long showcase dedicated to inspiring global climate action. In honor of Climate Week NYC’s mission, Building Energy Exchange is offering all BE-Ex Ed courses for free, using discount code CLIMATEWEEKNYC during the week of September 20-26.

BE-Ex’s on-demand courses complement a wide selection of live programs, like the Climate Mobilization Act program series, and written resources, ranging from retrofit guides to policy briefs and technology primers.
