Manhattan, NY Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, LLC of Parsippany, N.J. has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 59th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA). The award comes for the Davis Center at the Harlem Meer in New York.

Complete with a swimming pool, ice skating rink, pavilion, and public turf field, the new, 34,000 s/f facility provides visitors with year-round access to recreational activities, enhances accessibility, and encourages a deeper connection with nature. Langan’s site/civil, geotechnical, environmental, and natural resources professionals addressed numerous challenges, many of which were the result of the area’s environmental conditions. By prioritizing the restoration of the 8.5-acre site to establish a more natural aesthetic, the project team successfully reduced flooding, increased public green spaces, and enriched the surrounding landscape.

The Loch, which had been culverted beneath the Lasker Rink and pool in the 1960s, was restored to its naturally flowing state by an innovative strategy of resurfacing the underground stream, improving stormwater management, and enhancing biodiversity. Additionally, the team relocated utilities and developed foundation and slope stabilizing recommendations for the structures and site elements, including seamless integration of the facility into the surrounding hillside.

Judging for the awards program took place in February and was conducted by a national 32-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, the media, and academia. Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and excitement generated toward the engineering profession.

All 240 award winners—including 16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards, and the announcement of the prestigious Grand Conceptor Award for the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement—will take place at the 2026 EEA Gala on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC.
