Upstate loses a R.E. giant: Glazer of Buckingham Properties

Larry Glazer and his wife, Jane, lost their lives in a tragic airplane accident in early September. As chairman and owner of Buckingham Properties, Larry was the visionary behind the redevelopment and resurgence of the Rochester Area Central Business District and other areas in Monroe County. It was my privilege and honor to boast Larry as my client, friend and mentor. His wife, Jane, owned a home products company, QCI Direct, which employed over 100 in the area and was a respected business women and philanthropist. Larry and Jane served on the boards of many community charities and always looked for ways to give back to those in need. "Together he and Jane were among the biggest believers and champions in Rochester's future and because of them, their home town is a better place" said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY. Air Traffic Control lost contact with the Glazer's Socata TBM-900 about an hour after taking off from the Greater Rochester International Airport. Both Larry and Jane were avid pilots with Larry having over 30 years' experience in the cockpit. The Glazer's flight plan was to take them from Rochester to their winter home in Naples, FL. This is a route the Glazers have flown many times. Following Larry's request to lower his altitude, contact with N900KN, Larry's tail number, was lost forever. After four hours of being tracked by the US Air National Guard and the Cuban Air Force, the plane splashed into the waters north of Jamaica. Buckingham Properties has over 30 years of development, property management, construction and investment management experience. Several million s/f of commercial space and apartments were developed in the Rochester area by Buckingham after being founded in 1970 with partner Harold Samloff. Included in Larry's portfolio are some of Rochester's landmarks, including the Xerox Tower, the Bausch & Lomb building, Buckingham Commons and Alexander Park. Housing in the Rochester Central District was also important to Larry having redeveloped the Michaels - Stern Building, Ellwanger & Berry Building and Water St. Commons into some of the area's first loft apartments. In addition, Larry has teamed up with Morgan Management for the redevelopment of Rochester's iconic Mid-Town Tower into apartments and retail. Larry and Jane will be remembered as the visionaries who loved this community and contributed so much to its resurgence. They treasured their core values of always doing the right thing while focusing on the needs of their clients. "Larry was one of the true pillars of our community, and a tireless business leader for the Rochester community. Larry will be forever remembered as an innovative thinker with his own unique vision for rebuilding downtown Rochester; and his numerous philanthropic contributions to so many organizations. The Rochester community is a better place because of Larry and Jane Glazer," said NY State senator Joseph Robach. This region has lost a great instinctive developer and visionary. He and Jane have left a hole in the community's heart and their loss is immeasurable. Sam Berns is the managing director at NorthMarq Capital's Upstate New York Regional Office, Rochester, N.Y.
