Rochester AIA holds "Girls in Architecture" workshop; For 42 area girls in senior girl scout troop 60206
42 area fourth and fifth grade girls attended a hands-on workshop entitled "Girls in Architecture" at Holy Trinity Church. The event was co-sponsored by the Rochester AIA's Women in Architecture Committee and Senior Girl Scout Troup 60206.
The girls got to try their hand at structure building while learning about columns, beams, and loading. Their designs were subsequently put to the test, with the winner supporting ten juice boxes! They also designed a house floor plan, learned about perspective drawing, as well as shapes, drawing materials and shading. There were prizes awarded for identifying "World Famous Buildings," and a drawing was held for a "Barbie-Architect" doll.
In addition, the senior scouts presented a segment on body image, self-esteem, and the unlimited career opportunities available to women today.
Based on the response to the program, the AIA Rochester Women in Architecture Committee plan on making this an annual event.
