As a volunteer for the council, Hunt serves on a district advancement committee, helping to oversee the Eagle Scout service projects from 28 local Boy Scout troops. He also serves as a merit badge counselor, awarding an average 75 merit badges a year to deserving Boy Scouts.
He volunteers two weeks a year to counseling at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, and is the founder of the website, EagleCoach.org, which provides coaching and advice to hundreds of aspiring Eagle Scouts throughout the United States. He also volunteers as an assistant scoutmaster and Eagle coach with Troop 113 in Centerport. He earned Eagle Scout rank in 1967 with Troop 72 in Huntsville, Alabama.
In addition to Hunt, this year's honorees also include Cathleen Hansen (East Setauket) and Floyd Sarisohn (Commack). Hansen is a very active volunteer in scouting and her community. Two of her sons have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Sarisohn is a senior partner in the law firm of Sarisohn, Carner LeBow and DeVita. He earned Eagle Scout in 1946, and has been a very active volunteer throughout his life.
For over a century the Boy Scouts of America has been the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values based leadership training. Good Scouting programs require resources and well trained volunteers. Suffolk County Council provides those resources and training. The Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner is the centerpiece of the council's fund raising efforts for the next year's operating budget.
