Phase I of the interior $4.5 million restoration of the St. Agnes Cathedral of the Diocese of Rockville Centre was completed by a team led by HE2PD Inc. principal Jeffry Wengroff. The challenging project included detailed work in the sanctuary and chapel, with new elements such as the Baldachinno, Reredos Screen, marble floor, chapel paneling and brass chapel gates. The walls of the Sanctuary were repainted with a faux finish and brought back to their original grandeur. The restoration of the Pieta, Reredos, chapel altar and other liturgical pieces were also included.
The extensive and detailed work was accomplished through the leadership of bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, director of construction & planning, Eric Anderson, AIA, and pastor - monsignor William Koenig with the aid of a long list of team members. The HE2PD team was led by Wengroff, a graduate of St. John's University ('73), and Steven Pi, AIA.
"St. Agnes Cathedral is a historic structure originally completed in 1935. Bringing this structure back to its beautiful, original state required months of planning and a team of skilled artisans and professionals. Our efforts allowed the Diocese to keep the cathedral open the entire time with only a slightly restricted weekend schedule. HE2PD was responsible for schedules, budgets, contracts, financials and the overall coordination of both design and construction team members," said Wengroff.
The workforce was comprised of several highly skilled artisans including liturgical designer Rolf Rohn, who led the design team. There were multiple vendors in each trade to meet the challenging deadlines.
A construction management firm that specializes in education, ecclesiastical and healthcare projects, HE2PD has also been commissioned to handle phase II, the final phase of the St. Agnes Cathedral interior renovation, which is expected to start in January 2016.
