H2M sponsors and judges the 11th annual L.I. Regional Envirothon

H2M participated in the Long Island Regional Envirothon, which is an annual environmental competition for Nassau and Suffolk high school students. One of H2M's scientists, Kenneth Wenz, Jr., CPG, LEP, senior geologist, volunteered as a judge for the 11th Annual Long Island Regional Envirothon. H2M sponsored the event along with Canon USA, National Grid, New York Power Authority, Suffolk County Water Authority, Nassau County Parks, Recreation and Museums, and the USDAN Center for the Creative & Performing Arts. This year the winning team for Nassau County was from Chaminade High School and the winning team for Suffolk was from Sachem High School North. The Envirothon is a not-for-profit organization coordinated by the Nassau and Suffolk Soil and Water Conservation Districts partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Natural Resource Conservation During the competition the teams from each school rotate between six stations completing environmental tasks and exams that demonstrate problem-solving and decision making skills. The questions are based on five subject areas, aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and a current issue that changes annually. The winning teams (one from each county) are presented gifts from sponsors, plaques and awards. Additionally, students competing in the Long Island Envirothon have the opportunity to win scholarship funds and prizes, as well as, represent their county at the state level. The Envirothon began in Pennsylvania in 1979, then known as the Environmental Olympics. Its popularity quickly grew as a national event with more states becoming involved each year. NYS held its first Envirothon in 1990 and Long Island joined the excitement in 1999. H2M employees have served as Envirothon judges for the past two years, and we are proud to be a sponsor of this exciting event.
