Caliendo Architects converts piano factory into 69-unit condominium

The landmarked Sohmer Piano Factory, a historical masterpiece dating back to 1886, recognized for its red brick exterior and prominent clock tower, has been converted into a modern 69- unit condominium in Long Island City. Transformed by Caliendo Architects, the striking six-story building, located at 31-01 Vernon Blvd., on the corner of 31st Ave. and the East River, is poised to begin sales. "We're thrilled to bring this highly anticipated boutique style building to the market," said Andy Gerringer, managing director of the Prudential Douglas Elliman Development Marketing Group. "These unique residences really capture the historical, industrial aesthetic of Long Island City, while offering a comfortable, modern lifestyle in a great neighborhood." The Piano Factory will offer studio, one, two and three-bedroom homes ranging from 412 to 1,692 s/f, many of which will enjoy private terraces or balconies and unobstructed views of the East River and Manhattan skyline. Residents are welcomed into a window-filled, sundrenched lobby that opens to a beautiful outside terrace and private circular driveway. Detailed with mosaic tiles with piano key accents, the stunning lobby houses an original Grand Sohmer piano that invokes the musical history of the building. Each expansive home, featuring white oak plank flooring and soaring ceilings up to 12 feet high, is being designed by Penelope Kim Designs for the modern homeowner with discerning taste and style. Gourmet kitchens, fitted with stainless steel appliances, will be decorated with Caeserstone countertops, glass tile backsplashes and European gray oak cabinetry. Tranquil master baths have inviting Neptune Zen soaking tubs, and custom tiled showers with dome ceiling-mounted shower heads and four body sprays. Finishes include ceramic tiles, custom white oak vanities and elegant Watermark fixtures. An array of lifestyle amenities includes a 24-hour doorman, a fully-equipped fitness center with yoga room, oversized laundry facilities, a common media/screening room, and a convenient pet spa. Residents may also take advantage of personal storage space that includes a refrigerated storage room and a bike room, and leased parking. The Piano Factory overlooks the charming Socrates Sculpture Park, an internationally renowned outdoor museum and local park, and the exceptional Noguchi Museum is just a short stroll down the block. Other neighborhood attractions are close at hand as well as the many fine shops and restaurants of both Long Island City and nearby Astoria.
