Albany, NY The American Council of Engineering Cos. of New York (ACEC) will be honoring two New York public-sector agencies through named Awards of Merit, each with a $5,000 scholarship. The Award of Merit honorees for 2016 are the NYC Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).

The scholarships will be presented at the ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Gala on March 19 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to two engineering students currently pursuing engineering at a New York accredited college. The accomplishments of the honorees will also be recognized at this event, the proceeds from which support the scholarship program. NYS Department of Transportation commissioner Matthew Driscoll will act as emcee for the event.

The NYCDOT will be honored for their dedication to improving the infrastructure of New York City, including allocation of funds to bridge rehabilitation. Additionally, NYCDOT has supported transportation initiatives such as Vision Zero and Select Bus Service. DASNY will be honored for recent initiatives that have greatly benefitted the design community, including advocacy for use of alternative delivery methods (including design-build), development of new BIM standards, and administrative changes encouraging RFP responses from small firms.

“ACEC New York is proud to recognize the initiative shown by the NYCDOT and DASNY in favor of New York infrastructure,” said Jay Simson, ACEC New York President. “Their work not only benefits our members and the A/E/C industry at large but also contributes to better communities throughout the state.”

The ACEC New York Scholarship Fund will also present $60,000 in scholarships to engineering college students throughout NYS in 2016, as well as a $3,000 scholarship through the ACE Mentor Program, which recognizes and assists current New York high school students pursuing engineering careers.
