Buildings stand at the intersection of climate, equity and health. When done right, homes and offices can be properly ventilated for increased tenant comfort and safety without wasting energy. Electrification can reduce harmful air pollutants in local communities and expand access to cooling during heat waves. Strategies to increase energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions should be implemented in all buildings, not just those best able to afford upgrades. These aren’t just lofty goals; given all we’ve experienced in the past year, they should form the foundation for decisions facing the building community right now. That’s why I hope you’ll attend our 2021 Conference, Climate, Equity and Health, No More False Choices, on June 23.
This half-day event will explore how we concurrently address climate, equity and health priorities and discard paradigms that sometimes pit one against the other for compromised solutions.
We’ll start with two world-class speakers. Peggy Shepard, co-founder and executive director of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, will discuss systemic solutions to systemic problems in marginalized communities. Then Dr. Joe Allen from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health will review strategies for buildings that optimize climate, equity and health priorities together.
Two panels will follow. The first focuses on recent changes to climate policies that impact health and equity in buildings, and the second will address how to incorporate these considerations into building electrification. Sprinkled throughout the event will be short case studies that highlight real-world solutions and shine a light on how it can all be done.
Like our 2020 conference that drew nearly 400 people, the event will be livestreamed and professionally produced for a high-quality experience. You won’t want to miss it.
See you there!
