ACEC N.Y. engineering firms honored for outstanding projects

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) will award 30 Diamond Awards to 28 consulting engineering companies Saturday evening, March 29, at its annual dinner dance in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The awards are the highest given by the association for outstanding projects. Halcrow HPA and PB will receive Diamond Awards in each of two categories. Kari Byron of the Discovery Channel's MythBusters will host the evening's events. The awards recognize projects in several categories including studies and research, building/technology systems, structural systems, surveying and mapping, environmental, water and wastewater, water resources, transportation and special projects. Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards will also be awarded. This year, an additional award will be given for graphic design. Every year, each firm submits well-designed panels containing graphics in addition to descriptions of their projects. Named the Best Panel Award, the winning selection was made by members of the public relations committee from a small number of panels previously selected as outstanding by the Engineering Excellence Awards judges. This year, the Newark Light Rail panel, submitted by STV Group, won the award. "Engineering projects serve many purposes, but above all, they create and connect communities," said Gregory Kelly, president of ACEC New York, after viewing the entries. "Transportation projects," he continued, "create economic development. Power grids connect people to the electricity that makes modern life possible. Water and sewer projects deliver fresh water to homes and businesses and remove wastewater to be treated. Buildings provide structures that allow people to come together to live, learn, work and play. Each of these projects was technically challenging and resolved issues with imagination and foresight. We celebrate these projects to remind both the public and ourselves of the good and important work we do every day."
