What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community?

Two of my current public design-build projects are very exciting. The $121 million Harper St. DOT administration building and yard redesign in the Willets Point section of Queens, NY will create a very strong architectural presence, despite its utilitarian function. It will also significantly improve working conditions for workers who ensure the city continues to operate even during emergencies. Another project is the Woodhull Hospital Labor and Birthing Suite in Brooklyn, NY. It will create a state-of-the-art labor facility for an underserved community, including hydrotherapy birthing suites.

What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry?

Hands-on experience is one of the most critical elements allowing designers to develop their skills. All architects should spend as much time as they can in the field. Experiencing the building process and technology directly at construction sites develops understanding of the physical impact of design decisions and enormously strengthens design abilities.

What habit or routine helps you stay focused or motivated during a busy week?

Working out gets me through a busy, stressful week. Cardio, weightlifting and meditation is my formula for staying centered.

What do you wish more women knew about the opportunities available in the construction industry today?

Female professionals can design and build as well as anyone. I feel that female architects’ and builders’ strength lays in their ability to multitask, keeping countless project activities and parties under control, and the process moving forward smoothly.

What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity?

Fine art photography helps keep my creative energy flowing when “architecting” gets too technical and administrative.

Share one fun or unexpected detail about yourself that colleagues might not know.

Most of my colleagues already know that I am a huge comic book and anime nerd. I make no attempt to hide it!
