2026 Women in Construction: Debora Lopes, NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust

Debora Lopes
Senior Policy Advisor
NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust

What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community?

Recently, I’ve been thrilled project-managing the SHPO National Register and Part I submissions for two of the Trust’s Capital Projects. Working with a consultant, I was responsible for coordination, reviewing submissions, and ensuring alignment across teams, timelines, and external requirements. This work required learning a new preservation framework quickly and understanding how it intersected with modernization planning, procurement, and funding milestones.

It was especially meaningful to work with clients and partners who were deeply invested in the integrity of the deliverable.

What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry?

Do not mistake resistance for failure, and do not be afraid to embrace failures as opportunities to learn and grow. Asking questions, pushing for clarity, or challenging assumptions can feel uncomfortable, especially early in your career, but it is often how better decisions get made. Stay curious and do not feel pressure to lead or communicate like anyone else. Even if your contributions happen mostly behind the scenes, your perspective and judgment matter and play a real role in shaping better outcomes.

What habit or routine helps you stay focused or motivated during a busy week?

One of my recent goals was tied to crafting. I took a cross-stitching class and it now helps me reflect and decompress nightly!

Share one fun or unexpected detail about yourself that colleagues might not know.

I have 2026 goals that include a triathlon, biking 100 miles, attending the Westminster Dog Show and baking six new recipes!
