Who has been a mentor or influential figure in your career, and what is the most valuable advice they have shared with you?
I’ve had several mentors throughout my 15+ years in the industry and they have all taught me unforgettable lessons in both work and personal life. My current mentor is my Renewable Energy Program Manager, Sheila Ransbottom. Since the day I started working with her, she has helped me cultivate my skills as a leader in both technical and management areas. But perhaps the most valuable advice I’ve received from Sheila to date is more personal: Take vacations! Admittedly, I’m still working on taking this advice, but I see the overwhelming benefits to giving oneself a well-deserved break once in a while.
At this point in my life, a vacation gives me the opportunity to make special memories with my young family and nothing can be more important than that.
What inspired you to pursue a career in your industry, and what path brought you to your current role?
My inspiration to pursue a career in Civil Engineering came from elective classes I took in High School. I started with hand drafting and then moved on to CAD drafting and even took an “introduction to engineering” class. I loved the idea of designing a plan that can actually be built from. I found Structural Engineering most interesting and since structural falls with the Civil track, I enrolled in the Civil Engineering program when I went to Clarkson University. College strengthened my inspirations in Structural Engineering, but I felt like it didn’t allow me to progress in CAD designing. When I took my first job out of college, I was introduced to Civil Site Design and immediately loved Civil 3-D land grading and stormwater design. I spent over a decade working in the industrial, commercial, institutional, and renewable energy markets doing Civil Site Design before moving on to Wendel. Since joining Wendel, I’ve really taken to both Renewable Energy design in the private sector and Renewable Energy review in the public sector. And today I am the Senior Technical Lead in Wendel’s Renewable Energy Group, overseeing and developing the technical staff within our group.
