Why should this nominee be recognized in our Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlight?
“Edel Fitzgerald has grown to be one of the most sought out professionals within our company, as well as by our clients. Her tireless attention to detail is quite fascinating as is her drive to consistently build the best projects. During the past few years Edel has grown into the position of Lead Superintendent on an extremely complicated and high-profile project. I believe a lot can be learned from Edel; there is no ceiling in her career.” - Hank Hintze, Account Executive at JT Magen.
What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of?
For the last two years, I have managed a 150,000 s/f commercial interiors project for Fanatics, comprising six distinct scopes and phases. Completion is anticipated early next year. These projects have allowed me to expand my construction skillset, adapt to new challenges daily, and collaborate with experienced professionals in the industry. Personally, successfully managing subcontractors through various changes and completing each phase with strength has been a source of great pride for me. Being part of this diverse team has been an exhilarating experience.
What are the most important factors young women should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with?
To me, a good firm enables you to expand and enhance your skills and provides you with the right tools and support to both develop your career and deliver a successful project. Look for a company that values its employees and shows appreciation for all staff, regardless of their position.
Who inspires you most? What qualities do they possess that inspire you?
Gianna Pilalis, vice president of construction at SL Green Realty Corp. Gianna has worked her way from an assistant project manager to vice president for one of the largest office landlords in New York City. I had the opportunity to work with Gianna on 635 6th Ave in the early stages of my career, which provided me with invaluable mentorship in this male-dominated industry. Her confidence, dedication, and courteous professionalism are three qualities that inspire me to navigate my career in the construction industry.
Which professional organization(s) would you recommend to women just starting out in your industry:
Over the past few years, I have followed NEW (Nontraditional Employment for Women). This organization provides women with training opportunities in construction, utility, and maintenance trades, allowing them to start successful careers in these skilled fields. NEW has played a pivotal role in producing highly skilled workers for New York’s construction industry, and I have had the pleasure of working with some of these talented individuals over the years.
