In the past year, what project or accomplishment are you most proud of? The project I am most proud of this year would definitely be my current project, Bronx Point, located in the South Bronx. I grew up in this neighborhood so it’s humbling to come full circle and give back to my community in an impactful way. It’s a different type of pride knowing that I’m building something that will improve the landscape of the neighborhood and the quality of life for a community I was once a part of. I’m incredibly grateful for my team where each one of them goes above and beyond to ensure the success of this project.

Which professional associations or organizations would you recommend to women who are starting out in the AEC industry? NAWIC (The National Association of Women in Construction) is a leading association for women in construction. Not only is it open to all women in the construction industry but it also accepts female engineering students from Manhattan College (my alma mater) to explore and experience the construction industry hands-on.

What was a pivotal point in your career? In a previous job I was invited to a board meeting with the CEO’s of the company and I remember experiencing impostor syndrome. I began to question what I possibly had to contribute, but then realized that others thought highly of me and that my opinion was clearly valued. I am hardworking and ethical and have come to accept that I belong at the table just as much as anyone else. I feel blessed to be able to have the opportunity to make informed decisions after years of experience and commitment to advancing myself and my career.

How can AEC companies recruit more women? When I started my career there were few women in construction and engineering. The project I’m currently overseeing has a staff of 70% women. Many interns at L+M are women and introducing them to the field early on serves as a great opportunity for growth. I was introduced to engineering by a female mentor in high school and was immediately intrigued. Many young women in high school don’t know the opportunities they have in this industry; this is a great time to reach out to young women as they are deciding their futures.

What is your favorite building in New York? One of my favorite buildings in New York City is the Flatiron Building. Its unique design and storied history evokes a sense of nostalgia that transports you back in time. It’s one of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers and a quintessential symbol of NYC. Whenever I’m in the Flatiron District I make sure to go and see it.
