2023 Ones to Watch Rising Stars: Matthew Bettinger, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson

Matthew Bettinger
Partner
Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson

Number of years at firm: 5

One thing on my bucket list: To finish my PhD dissertation. In a former life, I completed all of the coursework and qualifying examinations toward a degree in Yale’s political science department; I can’t think of a better retirement project – many years from now – to return and finish the job.

When I am not working, I am: In addition to my deal work, I am a partner-mentor to the group of first-year associates. It’s incredibly rewarding to help guide them through the challenges that they face as young lawyers practicing in the real estate industry and at Fried Frank. We also have a meeting once a month where the associates have an opportunity to share ideas about their professional development and how we can continue to improve the firm’s practice. I had – and still have – terrific mentors who were instrumental in my career and now I’m happy to pay it forward to the next generation.

What recent project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of? While I am proud of all my real estate finance work, including 50 West 66th St., Sunset Industrial Park and Panorama Brooklyn, I am most proud of the $2.24 billion construction loan for the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. Fried Frank advised JPMorgan Chase, National Association and a Blackstone fund on the loan origination and financing. I was in a leadership role, working to connect the varied parties and deal elements. It was exciting for me to step into the limelight and lead the team in proposing and executing creative structures that would benefit our clients in a complex financing scenario.

What makes this nominee a RISING STAR?
“Recently elected partner, Matt is one of our strongest real estate finance attorneys. He successfully tackles bespoke matters from scratch, and is extraordinary with developing client relationships – the foundation to a successful career. A fantastic mentor/supervisor, year-end reviews consistently identify him as the supervising attorney junior associates learn most from.” - Michael Vines, Partner at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson
