What is the most daring thing you've done for your career? How did it turn out for you?
My most daring career move was to transition from my salaried position to working solely on commission. I began at CPEX as an intern and moved to a full-time position in operations supporting our sales and leasing teams, thinking I'd found my comfort zone. When the opportunity came to join the retail leasing team, though, I decided to forgo the status quo and throw aside any thoughts of failure and become a commercial real estate broker. Now I'm on the most active retail leasing team in all of Brooklyn, immensely enjoying what I do.
What is the BEST advice you have ever received?
I was raised to believe that you don't bring work home with you, so the best advice I received was actually the opposite. Commercial real estate is based on day-to-day social interactions - particularly making connections and building relationships - so just because you leave the office doesn't mean you're not working. Working from beyond your cubicle and outside of the standard "9 to 5" workday are keys to success in commercial real estate. After all, you never know when you might meet the pioneer of the next hot retail corridor.
What is your favorite tip for balanced living?
My favorite tip for balanced living is to not treat your work like a job, but as a lifestyle. Your working life isn't as easy to separate from your personal life as it seems. It's important to choose a profession that suits your strengths and interests and empowers you to take charge of your on professional and personal development. It doesn't hurt to be able to make a network of supportive, encouraging friends within the office, either. It all adds up to work that energizes you, making it easier to balance your professional and personal lives.
Where would you like to be in 10 years?
My short-term goal is to become one of the top retail brokers in Brooklyn, before taking aim at the rest of the New York City retail landscape. Born and raised in Brooklyn, I enjoy seeing the dramatic improvement of the borough's retail scene in so many up and coming neighborhoods. I'm excited to be a part of the continued development and advancement of Brooklyn retailers by bringing in tenants who will be beneficial for the community, a vision that I have for the rest of the city as well.
