Townsend honored by Autism Society and NYS Senate for efforts
Sheri Townsend, owner and operator of Spotted Zebra Learning Center, a private, for-profit preschool for children with and without special needs, was recently honored with a leadership award by the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region. Townsend received the award at the Capital Region Chapter's 'Unlocking the Possibilities' gala at the Glen Sanders Mansion.
Prior to being honored at the gala, Townsend was recognized by the New York State Senate for the autism awareness work she has done through Spotted Zebra, and with partners in her community. On March 30th, 2012, state senators adopted a resolution to recognize Townsend's achievements by pausing from their deliberations to congratulate her.
"I'm honored to receive recognition from both the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region and the New York State Senate," said Sheri Townsend of Spotted Zebra Learning Center. "A significant portion of my personal and professional life has been dedicated to autism awareness. I hope this helps to promote lifelong access and opportunities for people on the autism spectrum."
Townsend served on the Board of the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region from 2004 through 2007, volunteered as the organization's acting office manager from 2007 through 2009, and has co-chaired the Capital Region Chapter's Gala Committee for many years.
The Spotted Zebra Learning Center is a contemporary, state-of-the-art, year-round, preschool program. Knowing that the critical time for learning happens between the ages of three and five, the center is designed to meet the needs of all children, and truly prepare them for kindergarten and the high learning standards set forth by New York State. Daily activities are planned to help every child progress naturally. Skills are introduced based on individual development rather than age. As with most children, growth occurs as they explore materials in activities that increasingly challenge them either through structured activities or play. At the Spotted Zebra Learning Center, this happens daily.
