This top to bottom redesign of the Javits Center, which started in 2009, is a show case for innovative design solutions. Examples include the replacement of the original mirrored glass panels which covered the exterior with a new translucent glass curtain wall. This new glass curtain wall is transformative. It not only creates the impression of a new building, but softens the structure from the exterior because of increased transparency and opens the interior spaces to neighboring buildings as well as the sky above. Other improvements include new terrazzo floors and new food service kiosks to give the center the fresh look of a new building.
While many of the innovative improvements are clearly visible and help create the new building impression, as importantly, there are numerous behind the scenes environmental and sustainability related improvements that are also an integral part of the Javits reincarnation. Some examples include the new 6.75 acre green roof designed to absorb run-off water and improve thermal performance. This green roof is one of the largest ever constructed. Another example of an innovative environmental feature is the ceramic frit dot pattern in the new glass covering the exterior. Birds can "see" the fritted glass, which means collisions avoided.
The Javits team is also addressing the practical side of sustainability with their commitment to reducing energy consumption by 26%. Today's LED technology has the potential to play an important role in achieving this goal. LED research being conducted by the Javits team to identify viable LED alternatives could well become a useful model for other buildings. Example - replace standard high wattage recessed lighting with newly available LED lamps which provide a similar quality of light and dimming capabilities, but will reduce energy consumption by 85% - or more. LED energy savings translated to dollars are compelling.
