The Leonard Ugelow Memorial Gurwin Classic is one of the nation's top 10 golf and tennis fundraising events, having raised more than $1 million annually over the past decade and attracted some of the most prominent leaders in the business community.
"Ted Weiss and Joe Willen are well-respected in their industry, not only for their professional vision, but also for their integrity and generosity," said Larry Simon, chairman of the board of the Gurwin Jewish Healthcare Foundation. "We are proud to pay tribute to Joe and Ted, whose philanthropy and involvement in the community makes them most deserving honorees.
The tournament benefits the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center in Commack, a state-of-the art facility offering short and long-term care, specialized rehabilitation, sub-acute care, respiratory care and hospice care to 460 residents. Gurwin also operates an adult day health care program and home care programs as well as the Gurwin Jewish-Fay J. Lindner Residences, a 200-unit assisted living facility.
"I believe that the Gurwin Center is one of the best-run, not-for-profit organizations on Long Island and serves the Long Island communities' growing need for geriatric care," said Weiss, who founded T. Weiss Realty, one of Long Island's largest independent commercial development and management firms in 1969. "It is, indeed, an honor to serve with Joe Willen as one of this year's Gurwin honorees."
Weiss, a resident of Lloyd Harbor, has concentrated its efforts on the judicious conversion of obsolete light industrial properties to environmentally friendly office space. His company recently completed construction of Melville Corporate Center III at 324 S. Service Rd., Melville. He is also the founder and chief executive of TOTUS Office Solutions, an executive office facility, and Conference and Meeting Centers of Long Island. He has worked with and contributed to a multitude of charities including Family Service League, the Nature Conservancy, Toys of Hope, Make-A-Wish-Foundation, UJA and the Huntington Holiday House.
"Gurwin is the best of the best at what they do," said Willen, founder and chief executive of the Huntington-based Advantage Group of Companies, which include Advantage Title Agency Inc., Advantage Settlement, Advantage Foreclosure, Advantage Legal and Mortgage Advantage. "Gurwin is nationally recognized for excellence in providing care to senior and younger disabled adults through a variety of inpatient and outpatient programs," added Willen, of Northport, who has been involved with Gurwin for more than a decade. "I am proud to receive this honor from such an innovative and successful organization."
Willen is an active supporter of community and charitable causes, which besides Gurwin, include The Nature Conservancy, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, Habitat for Humanity, The Institute for Student Achievement and the Family Service League.
