Spotlights
As counsel and national coordinator for Liberty Title Agency's New York City office, Soo Mi Young draws upon her extensive experience in the title insurance industry, her in-depth expertise in general litigation and real estate law, and her love for New York City architecture to successfully meet the needs of her clients.
A graduate of Smith College and Seton Hall School of Law, Young knew that she wanted to become involved with real estate upon completion of law school because of her appreciation of New York architecture as well as because of the transactional aspect of the real estate title industry. "I often enjoy just walking around New York City and studying the myriad buildings - each one having its own individual sense of beauty and style, each one with its own unique quirks," she said.
"You can see the history of the human race in buildings throughout the world, and I love the fact that buildings can manifest some of the best qualities of mankind," she said. "There are buildings that echo the aesthetic beauty people are capable of expressing, and then there are buildings that reveal the technical ingenuity and vision that people are capable of imagining."
Young describes commercial real estate as an "inseparable part of my daily life." "I enjoy working on deals that involve buildings that I see everyday, and my familiarity with the buildings adds an element of extreme personal satisfaction when the transaction successfully closes," she said. This is why each day at Liberty offers Young a "new sense of adventure."
A favored aspect of Young's work is to tackle a problem where no solution is readily apparent and to use all of her outstanding skills and Liberty's unparalleled resources to work with the parties and the underwriter to fashion a solution that is satisfactory to everyone. "Providing outstanding client service is not just a catch phrase at Liberty, it is the way that we do business each and every day," she said.
One of the most challenging and most rewarding transactions that Young worked on for Liberty was a multi-site, multi-state hotel deal. Each site consisted of its own unique coverage issues, which she had to carefully analyze in the context of the laws in each respective state involved. "Working simultaneously on so many sites in so many states, each with its own unique set of challenges, was extremely satisfying to close," she said.
As residents of New York City, Young shares her love of New York with her husband and young son. As for how she blends a fast-track career with a family, Young believes it is all about maintaining a healthy balance. "There are days when you need to devote more time and energy to your career, and then there are days when you need to devote more time and energy to your family," she said. "Working for a company like Liberty Title Agency helps me achieve this balance easier because they understand that the success of the company is linked to the success of the individuals that comprise the company."
Young is admitted to practice in N.Y. and N.J. She is a member of the NYS Bar Association and serves on its real property section and committee on title and transfer. She also is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and of the Association of Real Estate Women (AREW).
