Name: Umar Sheikh
Job Title: Principal, Practice Group Leader - Real Estate Law and Transactions
Company Name: Offit Kurman
What was your greatest professional accomplishment or most notable project, deal, or transaction in 2021?
A major client, Moliving, the world’s first nomadic hotel concept is being recognized for its innovation in sustainability. Moliving is making mobile hospitality a reality with its luxury pre-fab units that can pop up anytime and anywhere. They partner with locals who own land in desirable (often seasonal) destinations, and act as hoteliers. It has been exciting to work with this company as it grows—I advise them on land use and zoning, drafting prototype contracts, partner agreements, and dealing with investors. In 2021, I was named chair of Offit Kurman’s RE Law and Business Transactions practice group. We have experienced rapid growth and anticipate significant growth in 2022.
How has your working environment changed over the last year?
My kids have gone back to school, while I am working hybrid-remotely. Eating breakfast and lunch with them became a true luxury and I got used to always having them around. I miss them!
What are your predictions for your industry in 2022?
Tech will continue to weave its way into real estate, and environmental and societal pressure will put sustainability at the forefront. The trend of moving away from large cities will accelerate and increase the appetite for expansion across smaller ones. The next 2-3 years promise to be an exciting time for the real estate industry. I am also optimistic about the infrastructure bill, which emphasizes construction and sustainability.
